SUPERTECH valves are produced from a forged blank which is then CNC machined for optimal precision. They then receive a heat treatment, which varies according to the application of the valve, and are ground again in a super-finishing process. SUPERTECH valves are inspected by several methods including ultrasound, X-ray and laser measurement.

For more than three decades SUPERTECH has worked to find the most suitable material for each valve and each application in order to increase reliability. Valves are therefore offered in different materials such as stainless steel, Inconel, titanium and sodium, the latter being contained in the valve stem and allowing better heat dissipation.

The intake valves for the Honda B16A engine are offered in flat and dish form, two head profiles. The term refers to the shape of the valve head, that is to say the face of the valve exposed to the combustion chamber.

    1. Flat valves

    • The head of the valve is flat, neither concave nor convex. The face exposed to the combustion chamber is therefore perfectly level.
    • Flat valves are often used in engines with a relatively flat combustion chamber, where the geometry of the engine allows better air flow and more efficient combustion.
    • This type of valve is generally preferred for engines running higher compression ratios, or for those seeking optimal performance at high engine speeds.

    2. Dish valves

    • A dish valve has a concave head, slightly hollowed into a bowl shape. This profile directs the air flow into the combustion chamber more effectively and can be an advantage on certain engine configurations.
    • A dish valve is generally used in engines with a deeper combustion chamber, or in engines seeking a better air and fuel mixture or better combustion efficiency at low to medium engine speeds.
    • This profile also has an influence on engine compression and is sometimes used to optimise the intake side of the combustion chamber.

    Differences and applications

    • Flat valve: often chosen for modified or racing engines running at high engine speeds with combustion chambers optimised for better intake and exhaust gas flow. Suited to high performance engines, where every millimetre of air flow counts towards maximum power at high revs.
    • Dish valve: a concave head can be used on engines running at more moderate engine speeds, or where better control of the air flow at low revs is needed. It can also be a sound choice where compression has to be slightly reduced, or to manage the combustion chamber on engines with different combustion characteristics.

    In short

    • Flat valves: level valve head, ideal for engines with flat combustion chambers and high engine speed use.
    • Dish valves: concave valve head, ideal for engines with a deeper combustion chamber, or where air flow at medium to low engine speeds is to be optimised.
