  • The Toyota 1FZ-FE engine

The 1FZ-FE is the 4.5-litre inline-six with dual overhead camshafts and 24 valves that powered the Toyota Land Cruiser 70, 80 and 100, as well as the Lexus LX 450. Built from 1992 to 2007, this naturally aspirated cast-iron 4477 cc unit (100 mm bore, 95 mm stroke) produces between 205 and 235 hp depending on the market. Renowned for its longevity and its low-end torque, it powers heavy off-roaders used for rock crawling, expedition raids and towing.

Its factory sturdiness also makes it a sought-after base for tuning: supercharger or turbo forced induction, higher compression ratio, higher rev limit. As soon as power exceeds the envelope Toyota intended, the reciprocating assembly becomes the link to reinforce. Forged connecting rods then replace the factory rods to withstand the increased mechanical and thermal loads without weakening.

    The forged connecting rods

Our 1FZ-FE forged rods are machined from wrought 4340 steel, the reference material in motorsport. They offer resistance to fatigue, bending and pull-out far greater than stock rods, while keeping dimensions strictly compatible with the engine's crankshaft and pistons. Supplied as a set of 6, they come fitted with high-strength ARP rod bolts and are ready to install.

They suit every tuning use: extreme rock crawling, off-road raids, drift, drag, circuit or the reinforced rebuild of a tired engine. Depending on the programme (Stage 1 reliability, Stage 2 moderate forced induction, Stage 3 high power), the forged rod secures the power increase with no compromise on reliability.

The torque figure applies when tightening is done without a stretch gauge. For optimal tightening, ARP recommends checking bolt-body stretch with a micrometric gauge, which is more accurate than torque alone.

    Technical guide

Forged 4340 steel: what is it?

4340 is a low-alloy steel with nickel, chromium and molybdenum. Forging aligns the metal fibres along the rod, which eliminates internal porosity and delivers far greater mechanical strength than a stock sintered or cast rod. The result is a tensile strength of around 930 to 1080 MPa and excellent fatigue resistance, essential when the engine gains power or revs. It is the standard for competition rods, able to absorb combustion shocks without deforming or breaking. Compared with an original sintered-metal rod, a forged 4340 rod gains about +19% in yield strength, +8% in tensile strength and +19 to +37% in fatigue life, giving a service life under cyclic load several times longer.

    Rod profiles

The H profile (H-beam) has an H-shaped section, with two flat sides linked by a central web. This geometry offers excellent stiffness in bending and compression for a controlled weight, making it the preferred choice on high-torque, heavy-duty engines such as the 1FZ-FE. Our 1FZ-FE rods are offered exclusively in the H profile, best suited to this six-cylinder's big-torque character.

How to choose your rod bolts? ARP

ARP 2000Rod bolts are a critical component: they keep the cap and rod body together on every cycle. Our 1FZ-FE rods are fitted with ARP 2000 bolts in 3/8" diameter. ARP 2000 is a high-strength alloy steel offering a tensile strength of about 220,000 psi (around 1517 MPa). In 3/8" diameter it covers roughly 200 hp per cylinder and withstands high engine speeds, up to 8500 rpm. These bolts deliver strength, reliability and versatility, with no particular storage constraint.

    Measuring bolt stretch

Torque tightening remains an approximate method because it depends on thread friction. The most accurate method is to measure bolt-body stretch with a micrometric gauge: you tighten until the specified stretch is reached, here 0.147 to 0.157 mm. This method guarantees an even preload across the six rods and maximum reliability at high rpm.

Why is it the most economical solution?

On a tuned 1FZ-FE, a stock rod that lets go often destroys the block, crankshaft and pistons. Investing in a forged rod set from the outset costs far less than an engine failure and a full rebuild. You permanently reinforce the reciprocating assembly, preserve the engine's value and drive with peace of mind, whether crawling, raiding or on the open road.
