Kit of ARP2000 rod bolts replacing the original bolts on the OEM rods of the BMW 540i (E39), 740i (E38) and X5 4.4i (E53) with the M62B44 engine.
The BMW M62B44 is the petrol V8 with 4.4 litres and 32 valves of the BMW 540i (E39), 740i and 740iL (E38) and X5 4.4i (E53). It produces 282 hp or 286 hp depending on the model and was fitted from 1996 to 2003.
At every engine revolution, the rod and piston assembly pulls on the rod cap, and only its bolts hold it against these inertia loads.
This kit replaces the original rod bolts with ARP2000 bolts, tightened to a measured stretch, the method ARP recommends for this part, or failing that by torque. Material: ARP2000, an alloy steel developed by ARP, heat treated to 220,000 psi tensile strength, with threads rolled after heat treatment. Against classes 10.9 and 12.9 of original fasteners, between 150,800 and 176,900 psi minimum, the margin is 24 to 46%. The ARP2000 bolts hold up to 10,250 rpm (calculated estimate).
| Brand | Grade / material | Head | Thread | Under-head length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ARP | ARP2000 | 12-point | M9 | 53 mm |
| Reference | Tightening torque | Stretch |
|---|---|---|
| ARP-201-6302 | 48.8 Nm | 0.203 - 0.216 mm |
For this part, ARP favours stretch measurement in addition to torque, the key to an exact preload. The figures in the table assume ARP lubricant.
Source of the torque and stretch figures: ARP 201-6302 instruction sheet, in the revision applicable at publication. The manufacturer's instruction sheet prevails in the event of any difference. Read the ARP 201-6302 instruction sheet
The ARP instruction sheet does not require a thread locker for this kit; only ARP Ultra-Torque grease is applied, on the threads as well as under the bolt head.

Stretch measurement supplements torque tightening and gives the most accurate preload. It is done with the bolt in place: the gauge, fitted with a dial indicator, bears on both ends of the bolt and shows the stretch achieved, to be brought to the value in the table above. This avoids the variations caused by friction, which matters on a highly stressed engine.
All the torque and stretch values on this page assume ARP assembly grease on the threads and under the bolt head; engine oil does not replace it.
An engineer with an aerospace background, Gary Holzapfel launched ARP (Automotive Racing Products) in the early 1970s with one goal: to eliminate engine failures caused by weak fasteners in racing. ARP designs and manufactures thousands of part numbers in California, cylinder head, main and rod bolts, in several materials depending on the use, and has become known for the consistency of its manufacturing.
| Brand | Model (chassis) | Engine code | Power | Years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW | 540i (E39) | M62B44 | 286 hp | 1996-2003 |
| BMW | 740i / 740iL (E38) | M62B44 | 282 hp | 1996-2001 |
| BMW | X5 4.4i (E53) | M62B44 | 286 hp | 1999-2003 |
On a tuned engine, a rod bolt that gives way can destroy the engine. Reinforced and therefore stronger, the ARP2000 bolts withstand high engine speeds and inertia loads: the risk of a fastener-related failure falls, and with it the risk of an engine repair out of all proportion to the price of the kit.
