The BMW engine concerned

This kit serves the inlet side of the cylinder heads of the BMW S58B30 inline six, a 3.0 litre twin turbo 24-valve engine launched in 2019 in the M3 G80, M4 G82, X3 M and X4 M, then found in the M2 G87 and the Alpina B3 and B4. The engine has twelve inlet valves and needs twelve guides: the kit holds as many.

BMW does not publish the size of its inlet guides. The 5.0 mm stem is the figure FERREA gives for its part. The exhaust guides for the same engine, with a 6.0 mm stem, have their own page.

FERREA copper bronze inlet valve guides

At the S58 inlet, every valve rides in a bronze sleeve that returns it to its seat at each lift, lets the head soak up the heat of the stem and houses the stem seal. Once the turbo engine strings together track laps or climbs in output, the bore turns oval: the valve rocks, comes down off-centre, and oil seeps into the chamber.

FERREA says its American copper bronze goes through a proprietary thermal treatment. The brand expects better heat transfer, slower wear, good strength at high temperature and a lubricated contact with the stem. CNC machining keeps tight dimensions, and valves in titanium or stainless steel slide in them just as well. Usually fitted with reinforced inlet valves. Twelve guides per kit.
