  • The engines concerned

The 7M-GE and 7M-GTE are Toyota's 3.0-litre, 24-valve inline six-cylinder engines (2,954 cm³, 83 mm bore, 91 mm stroke), built from 1986 to 1992: the 7M-GE is naturally aspirated, the 7M-GTE turbocharged. The 7M-GTE powers the Supra Turbo (A70, MA70) and the Soarer 3.0 GT Turbo (Z20). ARP lists both engines for each of its kits.

As standard, the cylinder head is held by fourteen oiled bolts, tightened to 78 Nm in several stages in the prescribed order, with no angle tightening.

Reinforced ARP cylinder head bolts and studs

The job of the head fasteners is to keep the cylinder head locked to the block despite the pressure inside the combustion chambers. They keep the gasket compressed; as soon as their clamping force drops, leaks appear between head and block.

Three ARP kits in 8740 are offered for these engines: two stud kits, 203-4202 (12 mm thread) and 203-4701 (M12 x 1.25), and one bolt kit, 203-3902 (12 mm). According to the 2026 ARP list, the 203-4701 is the "undercut" version of the 203-4202.

According to their instruction sheets, the studs are screwed into the block by hand first; the cylinder head is fitted afterwards, then washers and nuts are tightened to torque. The 203-3902 bolts, with no nut, are fitted like the original fasteners: head in place, bolts tightened to torque in the manufacturer's order.

Material of the fasteners: 8740, a chrome-molybdenum steel that ARP specifies at 190,000 psi tensile strength. Factory-fitted fasteners usually fall into classes 10.9 and 12.9, with 150,800 to 176,900 psi minimum tensile strength.

In 12 mm, the 8740 studs hold up to 900 hp on this six-cylinder engine (calculated estimate). On this six-cylinder engine, the limit of the 8740 bolts in 12 mm lies at 900 hp (calculated estimate).

Studs 203-4202 and 203-4701: the studs are fitted into the block by hand, without a torque wrench. For a permanent installation, the instruction sheet accepts thread locker, with tightening to be completed before it sets.

Studs 203-4202 and 203-4701: if the studs open into a water jacket, the instruction sheets call for an ARP sealant on their threads.

Bolts 203-3902: each washer is fitted with its chamfered side towards the bolt head; a thread opening into the water jacket receives the ARP thread sealant, a blind hole the Ultra-Torque lubricant.

Final tightening is done in three successive stages, following the manufacturer's tightening sequence; these torque figures only hold with ARP assembly lubricant on the threads and under the nuts or bolt heads.

The instruction sheet also calls for ARP lubricant on the washers.

These values are those of ARP instruction sheets 203-4202, 203-4701 and 203-3902; in case of doubt, the official sheet in force prevails, including for the full procedure and the tightening sequence. To obtain the intended preload, ARP assembly grease must be present on the threads and under the nuts or bolt heads: the torque figures in the table are established with it.

    The ARP brand

ARPFounded in the early 1970s by Gary Holzapfel, who came from the aerospace industry, ARP (Automotive Racing Products) set itself the mission of eliminating engine failures caused by inadequate fasteners in competition. Its thousands of parts are designed and produced in California, in several material grades depending on the application.

When to upgrade the cylinder head fasteners

Standard fasteners remain suitable as long as the engine keeps its original combustion pressure. They reach their limits in the following cases:

    • Higher boost pressure on the 7M-GTE, or a turbo added to a naturally aspirated 7M-GE
    • Compression ratio raised for more power
    • Reinforced MLS head gasket, which requires a high and even preload
    • Cylinder head that has already lifted or gasket that has already leaked
    • Racing or track use, with repeated heat-ups and frequent teardowns

Why is it the most cost-effective solution?

The original head bolts are sized for stock power: as soon as combustion pressure rises, the gasket and the fasteners are the first to suffer. Reinforced in 8740, ARP fasteners withstand a clearly higher pressure; the risk of a failed gasket or a broken bolt drops, and with it the risk of a repair costing far more than the kit.
