The 22R is Toyota's 2.4 litre four-cylinder with a single overhead camshaft and 8 valves, worked by rocker arms with adjusting screws, fitted to the Hilux, 4Runner, Celica, Corona and Cressida, and to the Dyna, Coaster and Land Cruiser commercial vehicles.

Its 4 original exhaust valves (13715-35020, 13715-35030, 13715-35040 or 13715-71010 depending on the period) have a 7.965 to 7.981 mm stem and a 37 mm head, or 36 mm for the 13715-71010; they take long spells of load, in commercial use as well as off road.

FERREA reinforced exhaust valves

On a naturally aspirated engine such as the 22R, the metal of the exhaust head reaches 760 to 870 °C, and goes past 1,000 °C under boost. The seat removes about 75 % of that heat and the guide about 20 %. The EV8 family reference steel holds 550 MPa at 600 °C, then only 300 MPa at 800 °C: a head that stays too hot distorts and ends up leaking.

For this engine FERREA offers a valve from its Competition Plus range, in stainless steel with a chrome stem, a hard surface that resists wear in the guide. The manufacturer quotes 20 % more hot strength and 25 % more seat life for this range.

Its head measures 39 mm, against 37 or 36 mm for the original valves.

The F1431P comes as a set of 4, one exhaust valve per cylinder.

Valve fitting

Before refitting, make sure the original collets (90913-03005 or 90913-03014) suit the groove of the F1431P.

With a 39 mm head against 37 or 36 mm originally, check the four exhaust valve seats before fitting.

Compare the 112.2 mm length with the removed valve: 112.4 mm for the 13715-35020 and 13715-35030, 108.5 mm for the 13715-71010.
