    This set fits the 7 mm stem inlet valves of the BMW Motorsport S14 four-cylinder of the M3 E30: the 2.3 litre S14B23 (195 to 220 hp, M3, Convertible and Evolution) and the 2.5 litre S14B25 of the M3 Sport Evolution (238 hp), from 1986 to 1993.

    The S14 has 8 inlet valves, two per cylinder. The original seal caps the guide and only lets through the oil the stem needs; BMW supplies it in seal set 11 34 9 059 171.

    SUPERTECH inlet valve stem seals

    On the M3's S14, often revved hard, each inlet seal meters oil for the 7 mm stem without passing any more. Thirty years of heat cycles make it hard: the dipstick drops between oil changes, the M3 E30 smokes blue as soon as it fires up or when it pulls off after long idling, then valves and plugs gather deposits.

    At SUPERTECH, the part is moulded in a good-quality polyacrylate (ACM), fitted to a 9.8 mm guide (outside diameter) and to the 7 mm stem. Its 8 pieces equip the full inlet of an S14B23 or S14B25; on the exhaust, where heat rises much more, SUPERTECH fits a seal of another elastomer, sold separately.

    The brand offered

    SUPERTECHA San Jose, California firm active for more than 30 years, SUPERTECH designs most of a race engine's valvetrain, from the valve to the seal. Ultrasonic testing, radiography and laser inspection approve its batches, which renowned engine builders then fine-tune.

    Inlet or exhaust?

    The S14 takes seals of identical dimensions on inlet and exhaust, but not of the same material: polyacrylate (ACM) VS-VW7-I for the inlet, Viton (FKM) VS-VW7-E on the much hotter exhaust side. SUPERTECH rates polyacrylate at 177 °C (350 °F) and Viton at 204 °C (400 °F) continuous. An M3 E30 cylinder head calls for 8 seals of each kind.
