The 1.6 EcoBoost is Ford's direct injection turbocharged four-cylinder of the Focus III, C-MAX, Kuga II, Mondeo IV, S-MAX and Galaxy, under many codes (JQDA, JTDA, JTBA, YUDA and their variants).

It has 8 exhaust valves, two per cylinder. The reinforced valves have a 24.9 mm head, a slim 4.95 mm stem, a 99.65 mm length and a 5.22 mm tip.

SUPERTECH reinforced exhaust valves

With the turbo on boost, the head of an exhaust valve passes 1,000 °C, against 760 to 870 °C naturally aspirated. The seat removes about 75 % of it and the guide about 20 %. EV8 family steel, the reference used for the original, falls from 550 MPa at 600 °C to 300 MPa at 800 °C: overheating, fatigue, a distorted head and then a leak.

The FEVI-2401F-HS-8 is made of Inconel, a nickel-based superalloy that keeps 860 MPa at 732 °C and 554 MPa at 816 °C, about 85 % more than EV8 steel around 800 °C. Its hollow stem is sodium filled; the sodium turns liquid at 97.8 °C and carries heat from the head to the stem and the guide; the stem is chrome coated.

Exhaust valve technical specifications

The FEVI-2401F-HS-8 is in standard size, in Inconel with a hollow sodium-filled, chrome-coated stem, converted to a single groove.

Valve fitting

This valve is a single groove conversion, to be fitted with the KPR-5.0-7S collets: the original collets are not reused.

The exhaust seats are reground at standard size before fitting.

Never drill or cut a sodium filled valve: in contact with water, sodium releases hydrogen and caustic soda.
