Applicable Honda engines

This set equips the exhaust side of the naturally aspirated Honda S2000 engines: F20C1, F20C3 and F20CVTEC of 2.0 litres, F22C1 of 2.2 litres, whether the car is an AP1 or an AP2.

The 8 exhaust valves of the head each slide in a guide. On the F20C1, Honda sells this guide only as an oversize part, under reference 12011-PCX-010; the valve stem measures 5.5 mm and the factory clearance runs from 0.05 to 0.07 mm.

FERREA and SUPERTECH exhaust valve guides

The exhaust guide works in the hottest part of the head. It re-centres the stem on its seat, leads heat from the valve into the casting and bears the stem seal. Once it gives up, the valve rocks and seals badly, oil trickles into the exhaust port, blue smoke leaves the tailpipe and compression drops.

FERREA starts from a copper-based bronze made of American material and puts it through its own heat treatment, which the catalogue credits with better heat dissipation, good temperature stability, slower wear and a well-lubricated stem. Tight CNC machining tolerances let the guides run with titanium as well as stainless steel valves. These SUPERTECH guides are machined in manganese bronze, an alloy the brand says gets rid of heat noticeably better than stock sintered guides do. The set gathers 8 guides with a 5.5 mm bore, which is a full exhaust side for one head, and often goes in alongside uprated valves.

Standard or oversize?

FERREA offers standard, with or without original centring, and +0.025 mm (0.001"). SUPERTECH gives no size: outside diameter 11.065 mm.

Manganese bronze

This copper alloy also contains manganese, aluminium and iron, plus a hint of zinc. Its hardness and its tolerance of wear and corrosion fit it for heavily stressed bushes, and an exhaust valve guide is exactly that, rubbed by the stem on every stroke.
