On the exhaust side of the Toyota G16E-GTS, a 1.6 litre turbocharged three-cylinder with 12 valves and 5.5 mm stems, this set replaces the original seals. The engine powers the Toyota GR Yaris, the GR Corolla and the Lexus LBX Morizo RR.

The head carries 6 exhaust valves, two per cylinder. Their original seal sits on the guide and regulates the oil that lubricates the stem; Toyota lists it as 90913-02127, 6 pieces per engine.

At the exhaust, this seal caps the guide of a very hot valve, licked by the burnt gases. Once hardened, cracked or distorted, it stops holding oil back: the oil runs along the stem, burns with the gases, pushes consumption up, turns the smoke blue and fouls valves and ports. Without a thin oil film, though, stem and guide would rub dry and wear quickly.

FERREA makes this exhaust seal from Viton (FKM), a compound meant for high temperatures, and fits it with a built-in spring that clamps the lip around the 5.5 mm stem to hold oil better when the engine is pushed. The brand aims them at hard-driven and race engines. The set of 6 fits every exhaust valve of the G16E-GTS; FERREA inlet seals, also in Viton, are sold separately.

FERREA builds stem seals, guides, springs and valves in-house at its own factories in Florida and Argentina. Its parts target modified and race engines, and its seals pair a high-temperature Viton with a lip spring to keep the oil exactly where it belongs.

Inlet or exhaust?

Same material on both sides, Viton (FKM), and the same lip spring: what separates the exhaust VS1037 from the inlet VS1038 is where they go, FERREA drawing each one for its own side and a 5.5 mm stem. They are not mixed up at assembly. The G16E-GTS takes 6 seals of each.
