  • Porsche engines covered

From 2001 to 2005 the Porsche 911 type 996 Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera S, Carrera 4S and Targa use the M96.03, a naturally aspirated 3,596 cc flat-six producing 320 or 345 hp depending on version.

Its 12 exhaust valves, two per cylinder, take the heat of the gases on every cycle; repeated high revs and track use lengthen these periods of strong heating.

    FERREA reinforced exhaust valves

The exhaust valve opens just as the gases have burnt: on a naturally aspirated engine the metal of its head rises to 760 to 870 °C, and beyond 1,000 °C when turbocharged. The seat removes about 75 % of the heat and the guide nearly 20 %. Against this, an EV8 family steel drops from 550 MPa at 600 °C to 300 MPa at 800 °C: the head weakens, distorts and eventually leaks.

Both references belong to the FERREA Competition Plus range, in special alloy; the manufacturer states 20 % more hot strength for this range and a seat life extended by 25 %.

With the F2448P the head goes from 34.5 to 35.5 mm without changing stem or length: burnt gases get a wider passage, escape faster and the engine gains power; the exhaust seats are machined to this diameter.

    Valve guide

The FERREA K10092 6° collets go with these valves: check that they bear correctly in the stem groove before refitting the springs.

Replace the valve stem seals and check the clearance of the guides in which the 5.95 mm stem slides.

The exhaust seats are reground with the new valves; for the 35.5 mm F2448P they are first machined to its size.

    OEM part number (exhaust valve):

Important: a set of 12 covers the whole engine, two exhaust valves per cylinder. The 911 996 3.4 Carrera (M96.01, M96.02, M96.04), the GT3 (M96.76, M96.79) and the Turbo and GT2 (M96.70, separate page) are not covered here.

    Don't forget the inlet valves

With the M96.03 cylinder heads on the bench, the inlet valves and valve stem seals are changed in the same job.
