The M96.03 is the 3.6 litre, 24-valve flat six of the Porsche 911 type 996 Carrera from 2001 to 2005: 320 hp Carrera and Carrera 4, 345 hp Carrera S and Carrera 4S, as coupé, cabriolet and Targa.

Its two cylinder heads carry 12 inlet valves, two per cylinder. Sharper camshafts, higher revs or track use expose them to more heat and harder seat impacts.

    FERREA reinforced inlet valves

The inlet valve lets the fresh charge in, strikes its seat at every closing and slides constantly in its guide, at 400 to 550 °C. At that level an ordinary chrome-silicon steel falls from 500 MPa at 500 °C to 250 MPa at 600 °C: 50 % less strength.

FERREA offers its Competition Plus range for this engine: a stainless steel built for heat, with a chrome-plated stem that slides better in the guide. The maker quotes 20 % more hot and fatigue strength and a seat that lasts 25 % longer.

The F2450P takes the head from 40.2 to 41.2 mm at the same length: air flows past the seat more freely, the cylinders fill better and the engine gains power, once the 12 inlet seats are machined to that diameter.

On reassembly, check that the collets sit properly in the groove of the FERREA valves and replace any that are worn.

F2449P fits original seats that have been recut; F2450P requires the 12 inlet seats to be machined to 41.2 mm.

    Technical guide

    The brand offered

FERREAFounded in 1978, FERREA produces its racing valves in its workshops in Florida and Argentina. Its Competition Plus pairs a heat-resistant stainless steel with a chrome-plated stem, for tuned road and competition cylinder heads alike.

    How to choose

The two valves offered share the same groove and length; the head diameter makes the difference:

    When reinforced valves become necessary

    • Higher-lift camshafts or stiffer springs
    • Higher rev limit
    • Supercharger or turbo added
    • Cylinder head rebuilt for track, hillclimb or rally
    • Worn original valves or seats already reground
