    The H22A is Honda's 2.2 litre twin-cam, 16-valve VTEC four-cylinder engine, from 185 to 220 hp depending on version. It powers the Prelude IV (BB1, BB4) from 1993 to 1997, then the Prelude V (BB6, BB8) from 1996 to 2001.

The engine takes 8 Honda 14711-P13-000 inlet valves, with a 35 mm head and a 5.5 mm stem, held by 14781-PR7-A01 collets. VTEC pushed higher, sharper camshafts or stiffer springs load them far more than in stock use.

SUPERTECH and FERREA reinforced inlet valves

On every cycle, the inlet valve opens to let fresh air in, comes back to strike its seat and slides in its guide, dozens of times per second at high revs. It runs between 400 and 550 °C, a range where the original chrome-silicon steel drops from 500 MPa at 500 °C to 250 MPa at 600 °C: half of its strength, 50 %, is gone.

SUPERTECH valves are made from a racing stainless steel of the EV8 family, which keeps 650 MPa at 500 °C and 550 MPa at 600 °C, 30 % and then 120 % more than the original steel; black nitriding makes the stem harder and smoother in its guide. FERREA offers three series: Competition Plus, 20 % stronger when hot and under fatigue, with a seat that lasts 25 % longer, then the 6000 and 5000 Series.

Both brands make oversizes, with stem and length unchanged: +0.5 mm (35.5 mm head) from SUPERTECH and in Competition Plus, +1 mm (36.0 mm head) from SUPERTECH and in all three FERREA series. The wider head opens a larger passage at the seat, the cylinder fills better and the engine gains power, with the inlet seats cut to the new size.

The +0.5 mm and +1 mm sizes require the inlet seats to be cut to 35.5 mm or 36.0 mm, a job for the workshop during the cylinder head rebuild.

The H22A sets its valve clearance with adjusting screws on the rocker arms: after replacing the valves, check it and set it to the manufacturer's values.

    Technical guide

    Our brands

SUPERTECHSUPERTECH works out of San Jose, California, and has supplied valvetrain parts for racing engines for more than 30 years: valves, springs, retainers and guides. Each part number starts from a specific cylinder head, goes through ultrasound, X-ray and laser checks, then is proven with engine builders, from drag strip to circuit.
FERREAFERREA Racing Components was born in 1978 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from the passion of two engine builders from Argentina. The workshop forges each valve as a single block from steel bar before machining it entirely on CNC; its parts run in NASCAR and drag racing engines.

    How to choose

The size depends on the condition of the inlet seats and on the filling gain wanted.

    CriterionOption 1Option 2
    SizeStandard size
35.0 mm head (SUPERTECH or FERREA), for inlet seats still at factory size.
+0.5 mm or +1 mm oversize
35.5 or 36.0 mm head: more air in (about 10 to 12 cfm per mm of head). Seats to be cut; also makes up for seats already reground.

    When reinforced valves become necessary

    • Higher-lift camshafts or stiffer springs
    • Raised rev limit
    • Turbo or supercharger fitted
    • Cylinder head rebuilt for circuit, hill climb or rally
    • Original valves marked, worn or already reground

Important: these sets cover the Prelude H22A engines; the Accord Type-R and Euro R with the H22A7 engine are not covered here, and the 2.3 litre H23A takes other valves.
