Reinforced valve spring kit Ford Volvo HYDA JZDA B5254T
Reinforced valve spring kits for the 20-valve Ford and Volvo five-cylinder engines.
- Brand: SUPERTECH
- Engines: HYDA, JZDA, B5254T 2.4 and 2.5 litre 20 valves (Ford Focus II RS ST, Volvo)
- Springs: single
- Contents: springs, upper retainers
Ford and Volvo engines covered
This kit targets the five-cylinder 20-valve engines of the Ford Focus II RS, RS500 and ST (HYDA and JZDA codes) and of the Volvo 850, C70, S70, V70 and XC70 (B5254T).
On all 20 valves the kit replaces the original spring and its upper retainer; the factory lower spring seat and collets stay in place.
SUPERTECH reinforced valve spring kit
A turbocharged five-cylinder needs its valves to shut promptly. A weakened spring lets the valve rebound against the seat, sometimes close to the piston: that is float, which appears as revs and boost pressure rise.
Seat load: 356 N at 33.5 mm for the SPRK-TS1012-BE-5C (80 lbs) and 378 N at 33.5 mm for the SPRK-TS1015-BE-5C (85 lbs).

Both SUPERTECH kits hold 20 beehive single springs (SPR-TS1012-BE or SPR-TS1015-BE) and 20 RET-TS5.5/T1F-BE upper retainers. The original lower spring seat and collets are kept.
Each load is measured at one set dimension, here 33.5 mm: the gap, with the valve at rest, separating the bottom seat from the top retainer. When this gap grows, after machining the head for instance, the thrust drops by the spring rate times every extra millimetre. The table below places both kits at this height with their load.

Our brands
| SUPERTECH, a company from California, has made valvetrain parts for racing for well over thirty years. Every batch of springs goes through a laser check, an ultrasonic examination and an X-ray before dispatch, so that no invisible flaw reaches a customer. |
How to choose
On a tuned turbo five-cylinder (more boost, a livelier cam, higher revs), the spring must keep the valve pressed against the cam through the whole lift. The two kits deliver 356 N (80 lbs) and 378 N (85 lbs) on the seat, for a maximum lift of 11.7 mm. Extra load serves no purpose: it wears the cam lobes and the tappets. Start from what your camshaft really needs and keep some margin on lift.
| Criterion | Key point |
|---|---|
| Choosing the pressure | On each kit, 80 lbs or 85 lbs names the force of the spring with the valve shut; the table gives it in newtons, 356 N and 378 N. To decide, weigh the lift of the cam, the rpm targeted and the boost pressure. As for rate, the first kit shows 46.7 N/mm and the second 56.5 N/mm. Both suit the same engines, so only the load differs. |
| Single or double spring | Both references use one beehive-shaped spring rather than two nested ones. The SPRK-TS1012-BE-5C is the softer of the two at 80 lbs, the SPRK-TS1015-BE-5C the firmer at 85 lbs. Both keep the factory lower spring seat together with the standard collets. |
When reinforced springs become necessary
- Higher-lift camshaft than the standard one
- Boost pressure raised above standard
- Rev ceiling pushed up by the tuner
- Engine rebuilt for track or circuit use
- Original springs tired by the mileage
