Unlike many of its competitors, which machine their cams from cast steel, CATCAMS cuts its camshafts directly from solid billet, which makes them far stronger. Most of the time, CATCAMS camshafts are hollow in order to reduce their mass.

Two parameters matter when choosing the profile of a camshaft: valve lift and the angle (duration of opening). A longer opening duration allows an increase in power and torque, while more lift optimises power at high engine speeds.
