Unlike many of its competitors, who machine their cams from cast steel, CATCAMS machines its camshafts directly from billet, which makes them considerably stronger. CATCAMS camshafts are usually hollow, in order to reduce their mass.

Two parameters matter when choosing a camshaft profile: valve lift and angle (opening duration). Increasing the opening duration raises power and torque, while increasing lift optimises power at high revs.
