The XU9JAZ is a PSA 1.9 litre, 8-valve four, with one inlet and one exhaust valve per cylinder; it is found in particular under the bonnet of the four-wheel-drive Peugeot 405 1.9.

It has 4 exhaust valves with an 8 mm stem. Often kept or tuned for road and rally use, the engine exposes these valves to the heat of the burnt gases every time it revs up.

On a naturally aspirated engine, the metal of an exhaust valve head rises to 760 to 870 °C. Nearly 75 % of that heat goes through the seat and about 20 % through the guide. An EV8 family steel holds 550 MPa at 600 °C and falls back to 300 MPa at 800 °C: past that point, the head fatigues, distorts and loses its seal.

Valve fitting

When refitting the springs, make sure the collets match the groove of the valve.

The 8 mm stem slides in the cylinder head guides: their condition is checked during the rebuild.

During the rebuild, the workshop regrinds the exhaust seats so that they seat on the new valves.
