These kits are made for the 4.0 litre, 24-valve Toyota 1GR-FE V6 found in the Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser Prado, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Hilux, Fortuner, Tacoma, Tundra and Lexus GX 400.
Each valve is returned by a factory Toyota spring, 90905-01087 (or 90501-33025 and 90905-01077 depending on the period), sitting on a spring seat 13734-62020 and held by an upper retainer 13741-20021 with collets 90913-03028.
SUPERTECH reinforced valve spring kit
When the lobe moves off, the spring puts the valve back on its seat. Past a certain speed, the valve's mass overpowers a spring that is too light: it lifts, bounces and may reach the piston, known as valve float.
At the seat, the SPRK-FM46 kits hold 409 N and 458 N, the SPRK-TS kits 271 N and 316 N (conical single or double springs).

The SPRK-FM46 kits supply 24 conical springs and 24 upper retainers, with the original lower spring seat staying in place; the SPRK-TS kits supply 24 double springs, 24 RET-K20A3/T1 upper retainers and 24 SEAT-TS/1GR lower spring seats.
Installed height is the dimension taken with the valve closed, from the lower spring seat on which the spring rests to the upper retainer. Each seat load quoted belongs to that precise dimension. When it grows, for example if the valve seats are recut, the load falls: every extra millimetre removes the spring rate (see the table).

How to choose
With reinforced springs the valve follows the cam well beyond its former limits: the rev limiter can be raised, a more aggressive camshaft fitted or boost increased without valve float. Seat load runs from 271 to 458 N depending on the kit (see the table). One rule remains: camshaft lift must not exceed the maximum lift allowed by the kit, between 13.2 and 15.0 mm depending on the part number.

| Choosing the pressure | The values 61, 71, 92 and 103 lbs give seat load in pounds, which is 271, 316, 409 and 458 N. To decide, three things count: camshaft lift, the engine speed you are after and the turbo or supercharger pressure. When they increase, the load has to follow, within the kit's lift limit. There is no point aiming too high, though: an excessively stiff spring wears cams and tappets early. |
| Single or double spring | On the SPRK-FM46 kits each valve gets a single conical spring, its diameter narrowing towards the top. The SPRK-TS kits nest two: the load is shared between them and each one checks the other's oscillations. Upper retainers come with every kit, whereas SEAT-TS/1GR lower spring seats only come with the SPRK-TS kits. |
