The Toyota engine concerned

This set concerns the eight exhaust valves of the 2AZ-FE, Toyota's 2.4 litre 16-valve four-cylinder with VVT-i variable timing, used in the Camry, RAV4, Previa, Avensis Verso, Alphard, Highlander, Harrier, Matrix, Auris and Lexus ES 240.

SUPERTECH part number GDE-TS55-E-8 comprises eight exhaust guides in the standard size: 5.5 mm bore, 10.3 mm outside diameter, 40.5 mm length, which is 2 mm more than the inlet guide. Toyota specifies an exhaust valve stem of 5.465 to 5.480 mm. The inlet guides have their own page.

At the exhaust, the guide sits in very hot gas climbing along the stem. It has to keep the valve in line despite that expansion, drain the heat towards the head and hold the stem seal, with an original clearance of 0.030 to 0.065 mm. With age the clearance grows: the valve knocks, its sealing drops, and burnt oil gives itself away as bluish smoke.

The brand makes these guides out of manganese bronze, an alloy rich in copper, and states that it sheds heat better than the sintered metal the engine left the factory with. They are usually accompanied by reinforced exhaust valves. Eight guides make up the lot: one per exhaust valve.
