Toyota 3S-GTE engine covered
The 3S-GTE is Toyota's 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder, with 16 valves and twin overhead camshafts. It powers the Celica GT-Four (T16, T18 and T20), the MR2 Turbo (SW20) and the Caldina (T21 and T24).
Originally each valve has a single spring, 90501-32022 or 90501-35006 depending on the period, held by an upper retainer and by 90913-03021 collets. The kits replace the spring and the upper retainer.
SUPERTECH reinforced valve spring kit
Past the cam peak, the spring pulls the valve back onto its seat and holds it against the tappet. Too soft high in the revs, it lets the valve lift off, bounce and strike the piston: valve float.
The four SUPERTECH kits apply 262 N at the seat at 34.75 mm (single springs) or 329 and 343 N at 35.5 mm (double springs).

| Collets | 90913-03021 (1987-1995) | Original retained |
Every kit supplies 16 springs and 16 titanium upper retainers. The single kits add 16 SS-3025 shims, placed under the spring on the original lower spring seat; the double kits add 16 SEAT-TS1015/1 locating rings for the inner spring. The MR2R references receive the MA2R retainer, which has a recess for the shim fitted under the tappet; the other two receive the MA2 retainer (single kit) or T1-B (double kit).
Installed height separates the lower spring seat from the upper retainer, valve closed. Each quoted load is exact only at that height: if it increases, after the head has been machined for example, the load drops in proportion to the spring rate. The table puts the four kits side by side. Heights and loads match the specification table.

Technical guide
Our brands
| SUPERTECH, based in California, designs valvetrain parts for competition, and every batch goes through X-ray, ultrasonic and laser inspection before it ships. Its titanium retainers lighten the moving assembly of the valve while the spring load stays the same. |
How to choose
A higher load keeps the valve on the cam when the camshaft is livelier, the rev limit climbs or the turbo pushes harder. Here that means 262 N at the seat for the single kits and 329 N or 343 N for the double kits, at the heights shown above. Stay measured: a spring stiffer than necessary wears cams and tappets.
| Criterion | Key point |
|---|---|
| Choosing the load | The pound figure, 59, 74 or 77, gives the load each kit exerts at the seat; the table also lists it in newtons. Decide from your camshaft lift, the revs you aim for and the boost pressure: when one rises, the load has to follow, without going beyond what is needed. The single kits, closer to the original, suit measured builds; the double kits are for more extreme setups. |
| Single or double spring | The SPRK-2081 kits use a single spring, SPR-TS1015-SI; the SPRK-TS1015 kits use the double spring SPR-TS1015, whose inner spring adds stiffness. This double setup requires the valve guide boss to be reduced to 4.06 mm in height or less (0.160 in) to house the inner spring. |
When reinforced springs become necessary
- Camshaft with more lift than stock
- Rev limiter you want raised
- 3S-GTE with a bigger turbo or more boost
- Head rebuilt for track or rally use
- Tired springs, or valves leaving the cam early
