The Honda H22A engine covered
The H22A is Honda's 2.2 litre four-cylinder, with twin overhead cams, 16 valves and VTEC timing. It drives the Prelude IV from 1993 to 1997, then the Prelude V from 1996 to 2001.
The original springs are double. The kit replaces the springs and the upper retainers, and keeps the stock lower spring seats.
SUPERTECH reinforced valve spring kit
Each time the cam lets the valve go, the spring decides how fast it settles back. A VTEC that revs high works it relentlessly: if the spring is undersized the valve bounces off its seat. Closing late, it meets the piston, which is what valve float means.
Both kits hold 351 N and 414 N on the seat, at 35.5 mm.

Each kit pairs SPR-H1000D or SPR-H1005D double springs with RET-K20A2/T2 titanium upper retainers. The original lower spring seats are kept.
Installed height is the distance left between the two retainers when the valve is shut: 35.5 mm for both kits, the height at which the 351 N and 414 N loads apply. A skimmed head or ground seats increase it; the load then drops, for every millimetre taken, by the spring rate in newtons. The values are all listed in the table that follows.

How to choose
The right spring holds the valve tight against the cam up to the target speed, without overloading the valvetrain. With 351 N and 414 N on the seat, these two kits suit a built H22A: livelier cams, a moved limiter, a turbo or supercharger. The stiffest is not always best: excess load wears cams and rocker arms faster, so look closely before choosing. That is why these kits target engines pushed well beyond stock.
| Criterion | Key point |
|---|---|
| Choosing the pressure | Each kit name carries a lbs number, the force on the seat in pounds: 79 for the first, 93 for the second, i.e. 351 and 414 N. Weigh this level against your cam lift, which must stay under 14.8 mm, the revs you are after and any boost pressure, without aiming higher than needed. Each value is repeated in the table above. |
| Kit contents | In each kit, SPR-H1000D or SPR-H1005D double springs work with RET-K20A2/T2 titanium upper retainers, while the stock lower spring seats stay in place. Nothing else differs between the two kits than spring rate and load. |
When reinforced springs become necessary
- Camshafts with more lift than standard
- Ignition cut you want to push back
- H22A paired with a turbo or supercharger
- Prelude entered in circuit or rally events
- Weakened springs, with unstable valves before the cut
