TOYOTA engines covered
The 4A-GE is Toyota's 1.6 litre, 16-valve, double overhead camshaft inline four-cylinder engine. In its 16-valve version it powered from 1983 to 1994 the Corolla AE86, the AE82 and AE92 Corolla, Sprinter and Levin, the Celica AA63, the Carina AT171 and the Conquest, from 116 to 140 hp.
It has 8 inlet valves, two per cylinder. The basis of countless builds, on circuit, rally stages or drift, it puts its valves through more revs, lift and heat than at the factory.
SUPERTECH and FERREA reinforced inlet valves
At high rpm, the inlet valve lets fresh air in and then cuts it off several dozen times every second. Its head drops back onto the cylinder head seat at every closing, while its stem keeps sliding in its guide. It works between 400 and 550 °C, where the chrome-silicon steel of the stock part is already weakening: it holds 500 MPa at 500 °C but only 250 MPa at 600 °C, barely beyond, which is 50% less. As soon as lift, spring firmness, rpm or boost go up, impacts, friction and heat wear the valve out faster.
Our reinforced valves start as forgings in a chrome-nickel stainless steel built for racing, close to EV8 (21-4N): it keeps 650 MPa at 500 °C, 30% better than the stock steel, and 550 MPa at 600 °C, 120% more. On the FERREA side, they belong to the Competition Plus range, for which the maker claims 20% extra hot strength and fatigue life, plus a seat that lasts 25% longer. Two finishes share these engines: the SUPERTECH black nitrided stem, whose hardened, smoother surface slows wear in the guide, and the FERREA chrome stem.
A +1.5 mm oversize is also offered, from SUPERTECH as well as FERREA: the head grows from 30.5 to 32 mm while stem and length stay the same. More air flows past the seat, cylinder filling improves and power rises, as long as the seats in the head are recut to this new diameter.

The number of grooves on the valve and on the collets must match: the SUPERTECH single-groove valves are fitted with KPR-6T-ST collets.
The +1.5 mm oversize requires cylinder head seats cut to the diameter of the new head.
Technical guide
Our brands
| SUPERTECH has been designing racing valvetrain parts in San Jose, California, for more than thirty years. Every valve is developed for a specific engine, checked by ultrasound, X-ray and laser, then tested alongside tuners, from the drag strip to the circuit. | |
| FERREA Racing Components started out in 1978 at Fort Lauderdale in Florida, founded by two Argentinian engine tuners, and still produces every part itself. Each valve is a single piece forged from bar stock, then CNC machined throughout, and is raced in NASCAR, at the drag strip and on road courses. |
How to choose
Under the retainer, the collets sit in the stem groove to hold the valve in place. Here the choice comes down to two points: head diameter and stem finish.
| Criterion | Option 1 | Option 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Standard size 30.5 mm head, for a cylinder head whose inlet seats still have their factory diameter: a rebuild true to the Toyota design, with no machining. |
+1.5 mm oversize 32 mm head: the opening at the seat grows, the cylinder draws in more air and power increases, by around 10 to 12 cfm per mm of head. Seats to be recut to this diameter, ideally with enlarged ports; also recovers seats that have already been reground. |
| Material | SUPERTECH black nitrided Stainless steel with a black nitrided stem and a single groove, held by KPR-6T-ST collets gripping the stem, so the groove is barely loaded: a good match for firmer springs, big lift and a raised rev limit. Available in standard size and +1.5 mm. |
FERREA Competition Plus Stainless steel with a chrome stem that slides better in the guide, with 20% better heat and fatigue strength, and a seat that lasts 25% longer. Offered in +1.5 mm only, for the 16-valve 4A-GE, with seats to be cut to 32 mm. |
When reinforced valves become necessary
- Higher-lift camshafts or stiffer valve springs
- Higher rev limit
- Turbo or supercharger fitted
- Cylinder head rebuilt for track, drift or rally use
- Stock valves damaged, worn or already cut to repair size
