- Engines: C20XE, C20LET
- Springs: double
- Contents: springs, spring seats, retainers depending on the kit
Opel and Vauxhall engines covered
These kits suit the C20XE, the naturally aspirated 2.0 litre four-cylinder with 16 valves, and, for the second one, its turbocharged sibling, the C20LET; they go into the Opel Astra F GSI, Calibra, Kadett E GSI and Vectra A, and the Vauxhall Astra Mk III, Calibra and Cavalier Mk III. Valve stems measure 7 mm on both the inlet and exhaust sides.
As original equipment, each valve is closed by a spring numbered 90322032 or 90448050. An upper retainer (90322031) and collets (90097110) hold it in place.
SUPERTECH reinforced valve spring kit
As soon as the lobe moves away, the spring pulls the valve back onto its seat. At high revs it can no longer cope: the valve floats, lands late and may hit the piston.
Here each kit brings 16 double springs: 311 N at the seat and 14.5 mm maximum lift for SPRK-H1002-C20, 356 N and 13.9 mm for SPRK-TS1012-C20.

The SUPERTECH kit SPRK-H1002-C20 supplies 16 SPR-H1002D double springs, 16 RET-H70/T1 titanium retainers and 16 SEAT-H1020DS spring seats; kit SPRK-TS1012-C20 supplies 16 SPR-TS1012 double springs and 16 SEAT-TS15/LS-IN spring seats. The original collets stay in place.
Measured valve closed, the installed height runs from the bottom of the lower spring seat to the upper retainer. The SUPERTECH figure applies to that single height only; should the assembly grow, after heavy seat resurfacing for example, the load falls by the spring rate for each added millimetre (see the figures in the table below).

Our brands
| Based in San Jose, California, SUPERTECH has spent more than thirty years on valvetrain parts for racing engines. Springs come from chrome silicon vanadium steel, retainers from military-grade titanium, and every batch is examined acoustically, radiographically and by laser before shipping. |
How to choose
With firmer springs the engine can rev higher, accept a more aggressive cam profile or run boost without valve float. These kits deliver 311 N and 356 N at the seat, 787 N and 837 N at 10 mm lift. Make sure the intended camshaft lifts no more than the 14.5 mm or 13.9 mm each kit accepts. These figures describe the kit as supplied, fitted at the height given above.
| Criterion | Key point |
|---|---|
| Choosing the pressure | To judge the load, set your camshaft lift beside the revs you are targeting: the more both climb, the firmer the spring must be. These kits give 311 N (70 lbs) and 356 N (80 lbs) on the seat. Keep a sense of proportion though: an overly hard spring wears cams and valvetrain early. Treat this figure as a starting point and check that camshaft lift never goes beyond 14.5 mm (13.9 mm for the second kit). The first kit's rate is 44.5 N/mm: the load climbs by that amount for each extra millimetre of lift. |
| Single or double spring | Two nested coils work together here: they add up their force in a small volume and damp spring vibration. A single spring has only one coil. Each kit supplies this set-up for all 16 valves; the original collets are reused. |
When reinforced springs become necessary
- Camshaft lifting more than the original
- Rev ceiling raised well above stock
- Engine converted to turbo or supercharger
- Cylinder head rebuilt for track, drift or rally
- Worn springs, valves floating at high revs
