SUBARU and TOYOTA engines covered
The BRZ's FA20 is a naturally aspirated 2.0 litre Subaru flat-four with 16 valves and two camshafts per head. Coded FA20D then FA20C, it delivers 200 to 208 hp in the BRZ coupé (ZC6) built since 2012. It powers the Toyota GT86 (ZN6) from 2012, with 200 to 207 hp depending on version.
The engine has 8 inlet valves with a 5.46 mm stem. Their length changed during production: 103.3 to 103.45 mm on early engines, 105 mm afterwards, so you choose the length of the valves removed. A supercharger, a turbo or sharper camshafts load them far more than standard use.
SUPERTECH and FERREA reinforced inlet valves
On this boxer engine, each inlet valve lifts to let the fresh charge in, drops back onto its seat as it closes and slides again through its guide, dozens of times every second as the needle nears the red line. It works between 400 and 550 °C; a standard chromium-silicon steel, rated at 500 MPa at 500 °C, falls to 250 MPa around 600 °C and gives up 50 % of its strength. A supercharger or turbo fitted to this naturally aspirated unit adds further load.
SUPERTECH uses an EV8-type stainless steel that keeps 650 MPa at 500 °C and 550 MPa at 600 °C, a margin of 30 % and then 120 % over the factory valve. The stem is thinned just below the head and the back of the head is machined again, two shapes that clear the airflow. FERREA valves have a flat head: the Competition Plus parts for 2012 to 2014 engines combine a stainless body and a chrome-plated stem and are said to withstand temperature and repeated loading 20 % better, while the seat face keeps its shape 25 % longer; the 6000 series uses EV8 stainless, and the versions for 2015 engines a special alloy.
Both brands supply the factory size, with a 35 mm head, and an oversize of 36 mm (+1 mm), leaving the 5.46 mm stem unchanged. The fresh charge then gets a wider opening at the seat, volumetric efficiency improves and the engine makes more power; the 8 inlet seats must however be machined to the new diameter.

The +1 mm size requires inlet seats cut to 36 mm; at standard size the valve fits seats in good condition, simply lapped in.
Choose the length from the valves removed: 103.3 or 103.45 mm on early engines, 105 mm afterwards.

Our brands
| Based in San Jose, California, SUPERTECH Performance has spent over three decades on competition valves, springs and retainers. Ultrasonic, X-ray and laser inspection approve each run, which is then refined alongside tuners on one particular cylinder head. | |
| FERREA Racing Components was set up in 1978 in Fort Lauderdale, in southern Florida, by two engine specialists of Argentine origin. Every valve comes from a bar forged in one piece and is machined from end to end on numerically controlled equipment; you will find them in NASCAR and on drag strips. |
How to choose
Two points decide on the FA20: head size, chosen from how worn the seats are, then valve length, read on the removed parts as it changed in production.
| Criterion | Option 1 | Option 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Factory size 35 mm head, for a cylinder head that keeps its untouched original inlet seats. SUPERTECH and FERREA offer it in both lengths, as a set of 8 for the complete engine; the stem stays at 5.46 mm. |
+1 mm oversize 36 mm head: the air gets a wider passage, with a claimed gain of 10 to 12 cfm for each extra millimetre. The seat rings are then machined to the bigger size; this size also rescues a head whose seats were already reworked. FERREA makes it in both lengths, SUPERTECH in the long version only. |
| Length | Short 103.3 mm at SUPERTECH (SIVN-1050-8) or 103.45 mm at FERREA, for 2012 to 2014 engines; the FERREA valves of this period have a 6.5 mm stem tip. FERREA offers Competition Plus (F2357P, F2358P) or 6000 series (F6337, F6338), in both sizes. |
Long 105 mm, for 2014 and later engines at SUPERTECH (SIVN-1050-2-8 and SIVN-1052-2-8) and for 2015 engines at FERREA, whose stem tip measures 8.2 mm. All long FERREA valves are in special alloy (F2379P, F2381P, F6349, F6350). |
When reinforced valves become necessary
- Supercharger or turbo added to the naturally aspirated FA20
- Higher-lift camshafts or stiffer springs
- Raised rev limit
- Cylinder head overhauled for circuit, drift or rally use
- Worn Subaru or Toyota valves, seats already recut
