The Toyota engine concerned

This set fits the cylinder head of Toyota's 2.4 litre four-cylinder 16-valve engine, the 2AZ-FE, found in the Camry, RAV4, Previa, Avensis Verso, Alphard, Highlander, Harrier, Matrix, Auris and Lexus ES 240, as well as several models sold in Japan.

SUPERTECH part number GDE-TS55-I-8 contains eight inlet guides in the standard size: 5.5 mm bore, 10.3 mm outside diameter and 38.5 mm length. Toyota originally specifies a guide bore of 5.510 to 5.530 mm for a valve stem of 5.470 to 5.485 mm. The exhaust guides have a page of their own.

SUPERTECH inlet valve guides for the Toyota 2AZ-FE

On the 2AZ-FE the stem of each inlet valve slides in its guide on every cam lobe, with only 0.025 to 0.060 mm of original clearance. When that clearance grows the stem tilts, the valve lands crooked on its seat and inlet vacuum draws oil towards the chamber: oil consumption, bluish smoke at idle and weakening compression.

For these guides SUPERTECH picked manganese bronze, which according to its maker moves heat much faster than the factory sintered guides. They are generally intended for a head fitted with reinforced inlet valves. A lot of 8 covers every inlet guide in the cylinder head.

Manganese bronze

This bronze is copper hardened with zinc, aluminium, manganese and iron. It wears slowly under constant rubbing, resists corrosion well and is mechanically strong, three qualities expected from a part that guides a fast-moving stem, which explains its use.
