The Nissan engine concerned

This kit suits the 16-valve cylinder head of the KA24DE, the 2.4 litre four-cylinder of the Nissan 240SX, 200SX S13, Altima L30, Navara D22 and Xterra, as well as several models sold in Japan such as the Bassara, Largo, Presage and Leopard.

A single SUPERTECH part number, GDE-NKA24-7-EI-OS, serves inlet and exhaust alike: 6.98 mm bore, 39.6 mm length and 11.05 mm outside diameter, i.e. 0.02 mm more than the original size. The kit groups two sets of 8, that is the 16 guides of the cylinder head.

Driven into the aluminium of the cylinder head, the guide keeps the valve aligned with its seat, passes part of the stem's heat back to the head and provides the seat for the stem seal. When it tires, the stem rattles: the valve drops in crooked, oil runs towards the chamber and blue smoke, a falling oil level and sagging compression follow.

SUPERTECH guides are cut from a manganese bronze, a copper alloy, which SUPERTECH says carries heat away far better than the sintered guides fitted from the factory. They generally go with reinforced valves. The kit's two sets of 8 cover the eight inlet valves and the eight exhaust valves.

Manganese bronze

This bronze comes from a blend of copper and zinc enriched with manganese, aluminium and iron. Hard and resistant to friction and corrosion, it is mainly used for bushes and guides working under heavy stress, which explains its choice for valve guides.
