Honda engine covered
This kit is meant for Honda's F22A family, a 2.2 litre 16-valve engine fitted to the Accord IV, Prelude IV and Ascot, in versions F22A1, F22A3, F22A4, F22A6, F22A7 and F22A8.
Each single spring in the kit replaces the standard one and comes with its upper retainer and lower spring seat.
SUPERTECH reinforced valve spring kit
As soon as the cam retreats, the spring presses the valve against its seat. High in the rev range the valve's momentum fights that return: load runs short, the stem bounces, closing drags and the piston can be hit, which is float.
Here, 16 single springs deliver 329 N on the seat at 41 mm installed height and 761 N at 10 mm lift.

The SUPERTECH kit combines 16 single springs, 16 upper retainers and 16 lower spring seats; the eight inlet seats are not the ones used on the exhaust side. The original collets stay in place.
Valve shut, installed height is the span between the lower seat, on which the bottom coil rests, and the upper retainer above it. The 329 N quoted for this kit holds at exactly 41 mm. A wider span, say after the seats in the head are recut, takes load off in step with the spring rate; the table below sums up the reference.

How to choose
Firmer springs hold the valve against the cam profile much higher in the revs, so the redline can move up, a livelier camshaft can go in, or a turbo can be added without float coming back. The kit supplies 329 N on the seat at 41 mm. Net lift above 12.7 mm exhausts the travel of these springs: the chosen camshaft must therefore stay under that figure. The benefit also shows as steadiness, including over long stretches at sustained revs.
| Criterion | Key point |
|---|---|
| Choosing the pressure | The 74 lbs mark equals 329 N on the seat. To settle on a figure, weigh three elements: the camshaft's lift, the speed you aim for and boost pressure, if any. If one of them rises, load must follow, never exceeding the travel the kit allows. Going beyond is pointless: a spring that is too hard tires the camshaft and followers quickly. |
| Single or double spring | A lone spring per valve, 23.7 mm outside, close to the stock bulk: a double-spring layout would give more load but a fussier fit. Retainers and lower seats come in the kit; collets do not. |
When reinforced springs become necessary
- Camshaft that lifts higher than the original
- Maximum revs moved well beyond stock
- Boost pressure raised
- Head rebuilt for track or mountain use
- Original springs showing fatigue, or float at the top of the range
