MAZDA engines covered

The B6 is a 1.6-litre four-cylinder with twin camshafts and 16 valves. It powered the first MX-5 (NA) from 1989 to 1998, including a turbo version (B6GP) in the early 1990s, then the second generation (NB) from 1998 to 2005, with 110 to 125 hp.

The engine has 8 inlet valves, two per cylinder. A sharper camshaft, a higher rev limit or a turbo kit loads them more every time they open.

SUPERTECH reinforced inlet valves

An inlet valve lets the fresh charge in, closes onto its seat every cycle and slides constantly in its guide, at 400 to 550 °C. At these temperatures a standard chrome-silicon steel falls from 500 MPa at 500 °C to 250 MPa at 600 °C, a 50 % loss of strength.

The SUPERTECH valves are black nitride stainless steel: nitriding hardens the stem surface and reduces its wear in the guide. They come in a high flow version and in a standard flow version with a dished head.

At +1 mm the head grows from 31 to 32 mm with the same stem and length: air flows past the seat more freely, the cylinder fills better and the engine gains power, once the 8 inlet seats are machined to that diameter.

How to choose

The groove is the recess at the end of the stem where the collets sit to hold the upper retainer. On the B6 the choice comes down to size and version:
